Philly Rumba documentary

"Philly Rumba" is a short film that features African American and Latin American percussionists and cultural keepers who have played a role in preserving the culture of rumba percussion in the Philadelphia region. Timbalona Collective is the lead producing partner for the film.


We’re seeking the following types of archival materials to potentially feature in the film:

  • Photos/videos/audio of rumbas throughout the city of Philadelphia and Greater Philadelphia region

  • Photos/videos of rumbas in NYC and the East Coast

  • Photos/videos of rumbas in parks and community spaces including Clark Park, Odunde, Imperfect Gallery, etc.

  • Photos and videos of the main participants:

  1. Tony Coby and Andre Hawks of Little Afrika

  2. Imperfect Gallery co-founders Rocio Cabello and Renny Molenaar

  3. Baba John Wilkie and Mama Dottie of Kulu Mele

  4. Baba Yinka Moore

  5. Jeff Johnson.

Please note that as a courtesy we can offer to digitize photos and VHS/8mm tapes, along with audio recordings. If we select specific materials from your personal collection for the final film, we will arrange an honorarium to be mutually agreed upon.
